Modernism

Modernism is a broad trend that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. Modernism is an extremely extended cultural movements that comprised a great number of art styles. It came to take the place of the Realism. Modernism is a great experimentation and fragmentation of the human experience, characterized by numerous deviations.

It affirms of human beings. It is the change of human place in the universe due to the advanced level of scientific, technological or practical experimentation. Modernism was a new rebellion (like Romanticism was a revolt at the beginning of the 19th century) against the academic traditions of the 19th century.

In a sense, modernism expressed the peak of mankind development that was reached by the 20th century. There came out never-to-be-seen-before forms of art including cinema, photography and later computing.

Among the most outstanding literary creators are T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, Joseph Conrad, Federico Garcia Lorca, D.H. Lawrence and so on.

Almost every writer established his own literary trend, for example Ezra Pound was the founder of "Imagism", Stephane Mallarme founded Symblolism that will be viewed in the next chapter.

The writer we should pay special attention is Erich Maria Remarque. His novel "All quiet on the Western Front" made a real sensation as it completely demonstrated that realism was an absolutely bankrupt phenomenon. It didn't answer queries of the modern public. Consequently, the World Literature developed further.
