The Literature of New Time

The literature of the New Time is mostly the literature of the 19th century. It is the time of prosperity of the literature in many European countries. It is the epoch of establishment of most European literary standards in corresponding countries. It is the period which ultimately defined the norms and trends of the World Literature we enjoy nowadays. It needs to be said that this period gave birth to numerous styles we have today. As said above, the first of them was romanticism.

Speaking about England, we just can't help paying into account George Gordon Byron, Walter Scott and Charles Dickens. In all Byron's novels and poems, one may feel the acute sense of all fatalism of the surrounding world. The main idea of romanticism is the world of evil and aspiration for an escape to the ideal utopian universe.

Walter Scott is considered to be the founder of the English realistic novel. His main hallmark is a great number of historical novels, including "Rob Roy", "Puritans", "Ayvengo" and so on.

He is the writer that was the first to expose all the "dark moments" of the English society to the whole world. His staple novels are "The adventures of Oliver Twist", "Domby and son", "David Copperfield", "Cold House" and what have you. He shows sympathy for all the low-brought people.

The main two French men of letters are Victor Hugo, Frederique Stendal and Onore de Balzac.

Victor Higo managed to show the living of all layers of French society. Apart from it, he demonstrated strong neglect towards numerous political take-overs.His main novels are "Marion Delorm", "Rue Blaz", "Notre-Dame Cathedral".

Frederique Stendal was the initiator of French realism. His main novel is "Trente et quarante".
